A growing number of FPGA designs now make use of embedded microprocessors. In many cases, these designs are based on simple RISC architectures; however, for more complex applications, the computational power required can increase rapidly. For example, signal processing is regularly found in complex designs and can consume significant resources. Until recently, this type of additional functionality typically has been provided by dedicated DSP hardware. However, modern FPGA architectures can combine these complex applications within a single FPGA, which is a more efficient and cost effective solution.
