Using New Silicon Devices to Build Better High Frequency Digital Radios by Rodger Hosking
Recently-introduced digital receiver chips are providing higher levels of integration, function and density in software radio systems. These devices include multichannel down-converters and up-converters, programmable decimating filters, polyphase resampling filters, and hardware demodulation circuitry. When coupled tightly to high-speed A/D converters and DSP processing engines, the resulting architectures provide all of the functions needed to build an entire high-frequency receiver channel . In this article Rodger discusses the features and the benefits of these new devices, and shows how they can be used in various applications.  more>>
Cognitive radio: An evolution from software radio by Angsuman Rudra
Software Defined Radio (SDR) has now been widely accepted as the implementation of choice for a variety of platforms and applications. The success in harnessing the promised flexibility and incredible processing power of the software radio has led designers to consider implementing cognitive radios that adapt to their environment by analyzing the RF environment and adjusting the spectrum use appropriately.

The key components for the successful implementation of cognitive radio are low latency and adaptability to the operating conditions. These are essential features that are needed for deployment of cognitive radios in multi-mission scenarios such as communications, EW, and radar. Cognitive radios thus represent a huge evolution of software radio. This article describes how high speed FPGAs may be used to implement functionality that would enable practical implementation of a basic cognitive radio using today’s software radio technology
