The Mass Customization of Media Gateways by James Awad, Octasic Inc.
The migration to IP-based networks is well underway, and the semiconductor products fueling this evolution have improved quite a bit. As the market matures, OEMs that design and manufacture carrier infrastructure and enterprise equipment are feeling tremendous cost pressures. These OEMs rely on a very small number of competing DSP solutions providers to deliver cost-effective solutions. As seen sometimes in technology, the next level of cost savings does not come from smaller transistors, but from applying business models from other industries and changing the way people buy the products.

The main concern for equipment manufacturers today is how to maintain their margins given increasing cost pressures. This can be done in one of two ways: either they reduce costs as their sales prices erode, or they add distinguishing features in order to charge more for the added value. There is a simple solution that can enable both of these approaches -- mass customization.

Multirate DSP, part 1: Upsampling and Downsampling by Li Tan
In many areas of digital signal processing (DSP) applications - such as communications, speech, and audio processing - rising or lowering of a sampling rate is required. The principle that deals with changing the sampling rate belongs essentially to multirate signal processing (Ifeachor and Jervis, 2002; Porat, 1997; Proakis and Manolakis, 1996; Sorensen and Chen, 1997). As an introduction, we will focus on sampling rate conversion; that is, sampling rate reduction or increase.

The process of reducing a sampling rate by an integer factor is referred to as downsampling of a data sequence. We also refer to downsampling as ''decimation'' (not taking one of ten). The term ''decimation'' used for the downsampling process has been accepted and used in many textbooks and fields.
